It is uncertain whether qualifying for the Russian Grand Prix can be completed on Saturday at the rain-ravaged Sochi Autodrom.

If not, the session will be moved to Sunday morning.

The third free practice, which was to start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, has already been cancelled.

Heavy rain was already expected over the Black Sea circuit, where the Russian Grand Prix will be held this weekend.

The track is indeed soaking wet on Saturday morning.

Race director Michael Masi has already informed the teams that the focus is on the qualifying session, which should start at 2 p.m.

Hopes are pinned on the expectation that it will become drier in Sochi during the afternoon.

There is not really much room to finish qualifying, because the sun sets at 6.15 pm.

To make room for the Formula 1 sessions, a few things have already been shifted in the side program.

For example, the first race of Formula 3 was moved from Saturday to Friday afternoon.

The Formula 2 race that would be held on Saturday morning, with the Dutchmen Richard Verschoor and Bent Viscaal at the start, is now scheduled after F1 qualifying.

Better weather expected on Sunday

The postponement of qualifying until Sunday morning has happened before in Formula 1. The weather forecast in Sochi for Sunday is significantly better than those for Saturday.

If it is not possible to drive the qualifying, then the result of the second free practice on Friday will serve as the starting grid and Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) will start on pole position.

Qualifying in Sochi is irrelevant for Max Verstappen.

The leader in the World Cup position already knows that he has to start the race due to an engine change.

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc also starts at the back for the same reason.

The Russian Grand Prix starts on Sunday at 2 p.m.
