Valtteri Bottas also set the fastest time in the second free practice for the Russian Grand Prix on Friday.

The Finn was 0.044 faster in Sochi than his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Max Verstappen did not get further than the sixth time in the Red Bull.

During the second free practice it was announced that Verstappen has to start at the back on Sunday, because he has already got his fourth Honda engine of the season in the car.

The third fastest time was clocked by Pierre Gasly in the AlphaTauri.

The Frenchman came out strong, although he lost his front wing at the Sochi Autodrom in the closing stages.

The fourth fastest time was for Lando Norris in the McLaren.

Esteban Ocon set the fifth fastest time with his Alpine.

Formula 1 announced prior to training that qualifying scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. may be postponed to the end of Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.

A lot of rain is expected in Sochi on Saturday in particular, so there is a real chance that it will not be possible to drive.

If the qualification is no longer run at all, the result of the second free practice will be used as the starting position.

Training in Sochi was briefly halted due to a crash by Antonio Giovinazzi.

The Italian hit the tire piles hard with his Alfa Romeo and then left the necessary parts on the track, which had to be cleaned up.
