French football was once again rocked by fan riots on Wednesday evening.

It went wrong at both Angers-Olympique Marseille and Montpellier-Girondins de Bordeaux.

After the Ligue 1 match between Angers and Olympique Marseille (0-0), things went awry when Marseille fans climbed over the gates of the section and faced the Angers supporters in the adjacent section.

Stewards and security guards narrowly prevented the rioters from entering the stands with Angers fans.

However, blows were dealt back and forth and objects were thrown.

The stadium speaker in Stade Raymond-Kopa called on the rioters to behave.

"Please, please, what images does this produce?" he cried desperately.

"Please calm down."

Bordeaux fans harassed in Montpellier

Earlier in the evening, at least 16 Girondins de Bordeaux supporters were injured when they were attacked by supporters of opponent Montpellier.

That happened when they arrived by bus in Montpellier before the game.

About 50 home fans attacked the Bordeaux bus at a roundabout with iron bars and smoke bombs.

Earlier this season, things went wrong in the stadiums during the OGC Nice-Olympique Marseille and RC Lens-Lille OSC matches.

In Nice, Marseille players were attacked on the pitch by fans of the home side, while in Lens supporters of both clubs went head-to-head on the pitch.
