Thomas Tuchel has reached the round of 16 in the English League Cup with Chelsea.

In the third round on Wednesday, his team beat Aston Villa 4-3 on penalties.

At the end of regular time it was 1: 1 (0: 0), there was no extra time.

The lead for Blues was scored by the German international Timo Werner (54th), Cameron Archer equalized ten minutes later for Villa.

Even when Thomas Tuchel came on in the 76th minute for star striker Romelu Lukaku, his team failed to score in regular time.

However, the Belgian scored in the subsequent penalty shoot-out.

Turin fights first win of the season

Third in the table, Manchester United, were eliminated by a 0: 1 (0: 1) home defeat against West Ham United.

Without a new signing Cristiano Ronaldo, who was not in the squad, the hosts had more possession, but were not accurate in the opposing penalty area.

An early goal by Argentinian Manuel Lanzini in the 9th minute was enough for West Ham to make it into the round of 16.

Italy’s soccer record champions Juventus Turin stopped the historically bad start to the season and with a lot of effort won their first Serie A win at Spezia Calcio with 3: 2 (1: 1). After the guest lead by Moise Kean after 28 minutes, the outsider struck back on Wednesday and turned the result around with goals from Emmanuel Gyasi (33rd) and Janis Antiste (49th) to a surprising 2-1 lead. Within six minutes, Federico Chiesa (66th) and Matthijs de Ligt (72nd) secured the triumph for the favorite with their hits.

Previously, Juve and coach Massimiliano Allegri had only scored two points in the first four league games, the last time that happened to the Bianconeri 60 years ago and only three times in their club history (1942/43, 1955/56, 1961/62).

The Turin team have been waiting for a clean sheet for 19 games - that has not happened to any other club in Europe's top leagues during this period.

Volland scores for Monaco

After the successful start in the Europa League, AS Monaco celebrated their second win of the season with coach Nico Kovac in the French Ligue 1. With goalkeeper Alexander Nübel and national player Kevin Volland in the starting line-up, Monaco beat AS St. Etienne 3-1 (1-1) at home on matchday 7. The former Leverkusen-based Volland marked the lead in the 28th minute with a sharp shot from a slightly acute angle. Just six minutes later, visiting goalkeeper Etienne Green saw the red card after a gross foul on Monaco striker Myron Boadu. But despite being outnumbered, St. Etienne equalized through Denis Bouanga (41st).

After the restart, captain Ben Yedder (60th) brought the home side back into the front with a converted hand penalty, before he volleyed the decision in the 85th minute after the preparatory work by Volland.

Stade Rennes celebrated a 6-0 (2-0) home win against Clermont Foot.

Champions OSC Lille defeated Stade Reims 2-1 (2-0) in their second home win.

PSG successful even without Messi

The French top club Paris St. Germain have meanwhile also won their seventh game of the current Ligue 1 season without superstar Lionel Messi.

At outsider FC Metz, PSG achieved a 2-1 (1-1) victory thanks to a double from former Dortmund player Achraf Hakimi.

The Moroccan made the decision shortly before the final whistle (90 + 5).

Newcomer Messi missed the league leaders on Matchday 7 after a blow to the knee due to a bone contusion.

Hakimi hit the PSG lead early (5th), Boubakar Kouyate equalized before the break (39th).

After seeing Dylan Bronn at Metz in injury time yellow-red (90. + 1), Hakimi struck a second time.

Julian Draxler came on as a substitute for Paris in the closing stages.

Olympique Lyon defeated ES Troyes AC 3-1 (0-1).

Former national player Jerome Boateng sat on the bench with the hosts for 90 minutes.
