Samuel Eto'o soon at the head of Cameroonian football?

The football legend and young retiree [since 2019] announced on Wednesday September 22 his candidacy for the presidency of the Cameroonian football federation (Fecafoot).

"I have the pleasure and the honor to announce my candidacy for the presidency of the Cameroonian Football Federation", wrote on his Twitter account the former Barcelona star striker who also passed through Inter Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid among others.

"After careful consideration, I took this freedom out of love for Cameroon and out of passion for our football," Eto'o explained, adding: "it is time to start the reconstruction of our football".

The announcement of the candidacy of the young football retiree comes as Fecafoot has been in crisis for several months.

The current president, Seidou Mbombo Njoya, was elected in 2018, but his election, contested by several Cameroonian football players, was canceled in mid-January by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Despite everything, he remained in post with the mission of working on the organization of new elections.

This retention was badly received by a fringe of sports players who then decided to appoint another president at the head of Fecafoot.

However, this did not benefit from the support of the authorities, the African Football Confederation (CAF) or FIFA.

In 2018, Samuel Eto'o supported the candidacy of Seidou Mbombo Njoya, but he now expresses his "disappointment".

The promises made three years ago by the current president "seemed to me worthy of interest for the future of our country", he justified himself.

"At the time of the assessment, I have no regrets even if the fruits have not kept the promise of the flowers," he said.

The election of the new president is scheduled for December.

Cameroon will host the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations from January 9 to February 7, 2022.
