In August, with just under a year left until the European Football Championship, Uefa reported that 140,000 match tickets had already been sold.

According to their forecasts, the number is expected to rise to 700,000 and the championship is expected to be the largest women's sporting event ever.

- The interest comes from fans all over the world, which shows how important European women's football has become.

These figures are unparalleled in women's sports in Europe, said Nadine Kessler, head of women's football at Uefa, in a press release.

Despite the huge interest, several of the arenas are smaller than during previous championships.

Manchester City Academy Arena can only seat 4,700 spectators.

There, three group matches will be decided during the European Championships.

Leigh Sports Village has an audience capacity of 8,000, where four matches will be played - one of them is a quarter final.

"You want to play in the biggest arenas"

- You want to play in the biggest arenas, and that's what we've done during the last championships, so you expect that trend to continue.

So it is of course difficult if you then have to play in arenas that are smaller and if it means that there is not enough space for everyone who wants to come and watch, says Lise Klaveness to NRK.

The Swedish national team manager Marika Domanski Lyfors does not want to comment on the plan.

"Uefa can comment on that.

They probably have some explanation for it ", writes Domanski Lyfors in a text message to SVT Sport.

By comparison, the smallest arena during the 2017 European Championships in the Netherlands took in 10,500 spectators.

During the 2019 World Cup in France, the smallest arena had room for 20,068 people.

But the European Championships 2022 have not only been located in small arenas.

Six out of ten have a capacity for 30,000 spectators or more, the final arena Wembley can take in 89,000 fans.

SVT Sport is looking for Uefa for a comment.
