The Ice Hockey World Cup has been played annually, with the exception of the Olympic seasons since the sport became part of the Olympic Games.
Now that thing is changing.
Today, at the IIHF's half-yearly congress in St.
Petersburg, the proposal to play the world championship for women, the A-group, during the Olympic years was voted through.
It will thus be a World Cup in Denmark next year.
- We have had a good discussion within the council.
We wanted to reach a long-term solution, says IIHF's chairman Zsucsanna Kolbenheyer.
The idea is that the World Cup will continue to be played in March / April, but during the Olympic seasons 2022 and 2026, the championship will take place in August.
– Vi vill stärka damhockeyn framgent och tänker att det inte finns någon anledning varför damerna inte ska spela under en OS-säsong, sade Franz Reindl, ansvarig för IIHF:s tävlings- och samordningsskommitte i juni.
