Last year, Federer underwent two knee surgeries, which followed the one he did before the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro 2016, which he missed.

Then he had a hope of extending his career by one to two years.

Now it has been five and the Swiss still believes in another comeback.

Five weeks ago, Federer announced that he would undergo another knee operation.

It has now been performed, it is unclear when, and the 40-year-old has his eyes on the future in an interview with Eurosport.

"Feeling strong"

- I feel very good even if things are not what I hoped they would be.

But I am recovering well and the rehab is going very well, says Federer who last played at Wimbledon this summer when he went out in the quarterfinals after looking hampered in his movement pattern.

- I have not had any setbacks and feel strong and expectant of what awaits.

I wish I would get back to the tennis court as soon as possible but I have to be patient, he says.

- I have a slow period now and have to take it step by step.

So far I am very happy, Federer continues.
