Bauke Mollema crashed hard on Friday in the time trial of the Tour of Luxembourg.

The stage win in Dudelange went to the Italian Mattia Cattaneo.

Mollema steered at too high a speed and was unable to keep the corner.

As a result, the Trek-Segafredo rider rolled over.

With a battered back and buttocks Mollema was able to finish the 25.4 kilometer time trial.

He set the 98th time out of 119 participants, 4.29 minutes behind Cattaneo.

It is still unclear whether the fall of Mollema will have consequences for the World Cycling Championships, where the Groninger will be one of the intended spearheads of the Dutch team next Sunday.

In addition, the 34-year-old rider is lined up in the mixed team time trial, which will be held on Wednesday.

Mollema is in good shape, given his second place in the first stage of the Tour de Luxembourg.
