This summer, a post was published on the Swedish Football Association's intranet with the headline: "NN leaves SvFF".

The person, who had a leading position in the union, was thanked for his great commitment and wished good luck by the SvFF management.

But behind the praise hid an infected history that has created great divisions within the union.

- It is a crisis of confidence.

People feel very bad, says a source who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals.

SVT has talked to around ten people who work within or near the union and who all want to remain anonymous.

In combination with documents, we have examined what happened behind the scenes.

Couplings were erased

Last week, SVT was able to reveal that a manager at SvFF had to quit after it was discovered that the person had granted support of hundreds of thousands of kronor to associations where the person himself had a key role.

The money came from the project "Everyone is different - different is good", which aims to promote gender equality and inclusion in youth football.

The payments were made for several years to an association that changed its name year by year, while the organization number and other information remained the same.

Last year, the manager himself went in and changed information about the association in SvFF's internal system, according to documentation that SVT has read.

All direct connections to the person himself were erased.

In total, it is about half a million kronor that has been paid out incorrectly, according to new information from SvFF.

Source: Silenced by management

The incorrect payments were discovered at the beginning of the year, but the information was kept within a narrow circle and was never reported to the police.

Nor when the person left SvFF last summer was the real reason mentioned.

- The management has silenced this.

It is only when SVT published that they talked about it, says a source.

The union has described it as "a conflict of interest" and "indiscriminate action" by an individual employee - and said that the SvFF management handled it in a correct way.

They also say that the money is repaid.

But there is another view of the union's actions.

According to information to SVT, several within the union wanted to report what was discovered to the police - but the top management was of a different opinion.

- The organization is extremely top-down and there is a strong culture of silence, says a source.

The Secretary-General answers

The man to whom much of the internal criticism is directed is Secretary General Håkan Sjöstrand.

Several sources say that he protected the former boss - despite alarms from employees about serious shortcomings in the work environment.

- When I found out about this case, I was very disappointed.

I understand that employees also react in the same way, but then we have different roles and areas of responsibility that we must also handle in as sensible and correct a way as possible, says Håkan Sjöstrand.

He does not recognize the image that it would be top-down and there is a culture of silence at SvFF.

- I do not really share that image, but it is a serious statement and of course I will follow it up and see what may be behind these views, says Håkan Sjöstrand.

Following our review, both SvFF and the General Heritage Fund, which has contributed around SEK 9 million, have initiated reviews of the project "Everyone is different - different is good".

SVT has sought the former boss.
