“

Extraordinarily fabulous,

 ” Prime Minister

Boris Johnson

said of Emma Raducanu.

The 18-year-old Briton won the US Open on Saturday 11 September, beating 19-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez in two sets (6-4, 6-3).

For Queen

Elizabeth II

, the performance of the two young women is an inspiration for future generations.

Even the Spice Girls tweeted about this "

girl power

 " match.

It must be said that this is the first time that a player from qualifying has won a Grand Slam title. Emma Raducanu is also the youngest

tenniswoman

to lift a Major since Russia's Maria Sharapova, who won the Wimbledon tournament at age 17, in 2004, against American Serena Williams.

For Harry Bushnell, its very first coach, "

it is an exciting time for British tennis, to see such a young player climb all the rungs to the Grand Slam, it is historic

 ".

A success all the more dazzling as Raducanu, 150th in the world, took everything in its path: she won her ten matches, qualifying included, by 20 sets to 0. A determined youth and a flawless course at the US Open, reminiscent of sisters Venus and Serena Williams.

The next generation of women's tennis is here.

'I have no doubt your outstanding performance, and that of your opponent Leylah Fernandez, will inspire the next generation of tennis players.'
