Paris Olympics representative selection not based on world ranking

The selection criteria for the table tennis and Japan national team of the Paris Olympics to be held three years later have been announced, and the singles representative will be decided by the total points given at the newly established selection meeting and the All Japan Championship.

Following the Tokyo Olympics, the Paris Olympics will feature a fifth event of men's and women's singles, groups, and mixed doubles.

The Japan Table Tennis Association announced today the selection criteria for the Paris Olympics.

Until now, the top players in the world ranking have been selected as the representatives of men's and women's singles, but the Japan Table Tennis Association has changed the method of holding international competitions, and it is not a rule that all players can participate fairly. Therefore, for the Paris Olympics, we decided not to use the world ranking as a selection criterion, but to select a representative based on our own selection points.

Selection points will be given based on the results of domestic and international competitions from March next year (2022) to January 2024, when the Paris Olympics will be held. Domestic league T league, world championships, etc. are eligible.

If Japan wins two singles representative slots for both men and women, the top two in total points will be nominated as representatives.

As for the group, in addition to the two singles, the one who will remain for both men and women will be decided by comprehensively judging the compatibility of the doubles.

In addition, one pair representing mixed doubles is to select the compatibility of the pair from three players each for men and women who participate in singles and groups.
