The events of August 22, 2021 did not make good publicity for French men's football.

The league match Nice – Marseille lasted for 75 minutes before it had to be interrupted, at the score 1-0 to Nice, after scandal scenes.

The origin was that Marseille star Dimitri Payet was hit by a thrown bottle and then he threw it back, with full force, up into Nice's heel.

This led to supporters from the home team entering the field and great tumult broke out between fans, players, leaders and officials.

The match was paused for over an hour before it was stopped completely after visiting Marseille refused to play the match.

Closed for the rest of the season

Now it is clear that the match will be replayed, on a neutral level and in front of empty stands.

Nice is also deprived of two points and forced to play three home games without an audience.

Dimitri Payet is suspended at the same time in a match after his actions and his teammate Álvaro González, who kicked balls up in the stands, is suspended for two.

Marseille's fitness coach Pablo Fernández gets an even tougher penalty and is suspended for the rest of the season after pushing a Nice supporter.
