Former French football player Jean-Pierre Adams, who had been in a coma for 39 years, has died in a medical accident.

Local media reported that Jean-Pierre Adams, a former French soccer player, died at the age of 73 yesterday (6th) local time.

Adams fell into a coma during anesthesia while undergoing knee surgery at a hospital in Lyon, France in 1982, and was unable to wake up.

At that time, many medical staff at the hospital were on strike, so one anesthesiologist was taking care of eight patients, including Adams, and it is known that the accident occurred while the trainee injected the anesthetic instead.

Born in Dakar, Senegal, central defender Adams played in French leagues Nimes, Nice and Paris Saint-Germain.

From 1972 to 1976, he also played for the French national team, appearing in 22 matches in A-match.

After being discharged from the hospital 15 months after the accident, Adams stayed at Nim's home and was cared for by his wife, Bernadette Adams.

For nearly 40 years, Mr. Bernadette changed her husband's clothes every day, prepared food, didn't forget gifts, and stayed by her husband's side.

It wasn't until the mid-1990s that the anesthesiologist and trainee responsible for Adams' accident were convicted in court.

In an interview with the BBC in 2016, Bernadette said the hospital had not made any apology, even though the person involved was found guilty.
