It is a star-filled and very meritorious starting field when Europe's best dressage riders gather for this summer's second major international championship.

On site are, among others, double Olympic gold medalist Jessica von Bredow Werndl and other riders from the German gold team in Tokyo.

The UK is also sending its entire bronze squad from the Olympics to the European Championships.

The European Championships begin with the team competition, which is decided over two days, after which the individual classes await.

Jacob Nörby Sörensen and 11-year-old stallion Moegelbjergs Romeo are first out for Sweden on Tuesday.

- It will be very exciting, usually I'm good at taking it easy.

Of course it's a little more exciting when it's a championship like this, I would have been lying if it had not been so.

But I will try to do my very best for Sweden and for myself, says championship debutant Jacob Nörby Sörensen.

Championship comeback for Högberg

Jeanna Högberg, who is making a championship comeback, rides second for Sweden.

Högberg who in the space of just a few weeks managed to take both Swedish Championship silver with Lorenzo and gold at the young horse WC.

- Now I have started this horse a few times and we get to start here at the European Championships, so it feels very, very fun to be part of the team.

So we can all fight as best we can.

Jeanna Högberg was a reserve for the Olympics in Tokyo and the last time she rode a senior championship was the World Cup 2014 in Caen.

- That's what you fight for all the time, to ride a championship.

I'm really happy that I got the chance to ride this fantastic horse (Lorenzo editor's note).

So I really get to take the opportunity to enjoy being inside the arena again, says Högberg.

Two Swedish crews on the opening day

Federation captain Bo Jenå is looking forward to the start with two Swedish crews on the opening day.

- I hope they ride a safe and good round.

There is very good competition here as well, there are very many who have their Olympic horses here.

It is not to think that this is something that you can easily get through, but it is tough competition, says Bo Jenå.

And continues:

- I prefer that they ride flawlessly, of course, and then that they can spearhead it by producing the best in the horses, then there will be a little extra points.

Juliette Ramel and Therese Nilshagen, who both rode the Olympics and made it to the individual finals, will ride on Wednesday when the class ends and the team medals will be awarded.
