Table tennis player Thomas Schmidberger narrowly missed the first German gold medal at the Paralympics in Tokyo.

The 29-year-old, who has been paraplegic since he was five and is sitting in a wheelchair, lost to the Chinese Panfeng Feng with 2: 3 sets in a final thriller on Saturday.

While Schmidberger won the silver medal, as in Rio 2016, his final opponent won Paralympics gold for the fourth time in a row.

After two sets it looked like a clear final win for the Chinese.

Feng was brilliant, Schmidberger only reacted.

With 9:11 and 4:11, the German, who played for Borussia Düsseldorf, was quickly behind with 0: 2.

Then came the race to catch up.

He equalized the match with 11: 8 and 11: 4, in the decisive set Feng had the better nerve in a high-class game.

Stephanie Grebe (Berlin) has to be satisfied with that.

The second from Rio lost her semifinals against the European champion Maliak Aliyeva from the Russian Paralympic Committee with 0: 3, but had already secured bronze by moving into the semifinals.

Third place will not be played out in Japan, the two losing semi-finalists each get bronze.

Valentin Baus still has the chance to do better than his teammates.

On Sunday (3.00 a.m. CEST), the final is due for him after a 3-0 victory in the semifinals against the British Jack Hunter Spivey. The 25-year-old also meets his finals conqueror from Rio in the Chinese Cao Ningning.
