Benjamin Mendy is accused of having committed one of these rapes in August, while he was on parole.

The alleged attacks concern three people, one of whom is a minor.

Dressed in black sweatpants and a red hoodie, the 2018 world champion appeared in court in Chester (north-west England) where the judge ruled on his remand in custody.

The defender will therefore be in detention for two weeks, before a new appearance on September 10 in Chester court.

Benjamin Mendy only spoke to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

He was represented by his lawyer M ° Christopher Stables and assisted by an interpreter who translated the debates into French.

His club, where he has been playing since 2017, had suspended him on Thursday, a few minutes before the police announced his referral to justice.

The former player from Le Havre, Marseille and Monaco is accused of three rapes in October 2020 and another in August 2021, at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire.

He is also accused of sexual assault on a woman at his home in early January 2021.

He was further accused of violating his bail conditions in August, after being released on July 26, on a charge which was withdrawn at the hearing.
