The Ministry of Justice revealed the extensive corruption investigation in 2015 and since then more than 50 people have been prosecuted.

In December 2017, two former officials of the International Football Association (FIFA), Juan Ángel Napout from Paraguay and the Brazilian José Maria Marin, were convicted of, among other things, extortion and fraud.

Another 27 people and four companies have confessed to the crime.

It is now clear that the money seized during the investigation will be returned to Fifa and other affected unions.

"The investigation and prosecution have always focused on bringing the thieves to justice and returning illegally received money to those who work to promote the beautiful sport," prosecutor Jacquelyn M Kasulis said in a statement.

Initially, close to SEK 230 million will be distributed between Fifa, the continental federations Concacaf (North and Central America and the Caribbean) and Conmebol (South America), as well as additional national football federations.

"Not a single official in this investigation seemed to care about the damage done to the sport that millions around the world admire.

The only bright spot is that the money will help the disadvantaged people who need it, not wealthy bosses who just want to get richer, ”said Michael J Driscoll, assistant director of the FBI's field office in New York.

"Our work is not complete, and our promise to all who love the sport is: We will not give up until justice is done."
