"We will include the Afghan flag in the ceremony to show solidarity and have asked the head of the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) to act as a flag bearer," said Andrew Parsons, chairman of the International Paralympic Committee (IPK).

- We wished they could be here, unfortunately it is not possible, but they will be here in mind.

The Paralympics from Afghanistan were forced to withdraw from the Games after the Taliban took power in the country.

The airport in the capital Kabul is closed to commercial flights and athletes thus have no opportunity to get to Tokyo.

However, an asset from Afghanistan will compete in the Paralympics.

Abbas Karimi fled the country in 2013 and is one of the flag bearers in the Paralympic refugee team.

The Paralympics will be inaugurated tomorrow, Tuesday, at 13.00, Swedish time.
