Less than two weeks after her Olympic start in Tokyo, Konstanze Klosterhalfen has advanced to become the fastest German over two miles in Eugene.

On Friday (local time) in the US state of Oregon on the rarely run and non-Olympic route, the 24-year-old was even just below the previous European best time of the Irish rider Sonia O'Sullivan (9:19, 56).

Klosterhalfen came fourth at the start of the two-day Diamond League meeting in Eugene. The best German middle and long distance runner starts for Bayer Leverkusen and trains in the USA. Winner Francine Niyonsaba from Burundi narrowly missed the 14-year-old world record of the Ethiopian Meseret Defar (8: 58.58) in 9: 00.75 minutes. The fastest German over the two miles (3218.7 meters) was Luminita Zaituc in 9: 47.38 minutes. The DLV has neither records nor official best performances for this distance.

Double Olympic champion Sifan Hassan clearly missed the world record on her gold course over 5000 meters.

The 28-year-old Dutch woman secured victory in 14: 27.89 minutes, but remained more than 20 seconds above the world record time of Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey (14: 06.62).

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Hassan missed the gold triple she had hoped for: she won the 5000 and 10,000 meters;

over 1500 meters she had to be content with bronze.

Klosterhalfen came away empty-handed at the Olympics, but stayed just over her German record at 10,000 meters.

Because of a stress syndrome in the pelvis, the 24-year-old had to sit out longer this year.

The Athletics World Championships, which have been postponed by a year, are also scheduled to take place at the Hayward Field stadium in Eugene in July 2022.
