VfL Bochum celebrated its first victory in the Bundesliga after more than 4000 days.

The promoted team won the home game against Leipzig conquerors FSV Mainz 05 2-0 (1-0) on Saturday and was rewarded with the first three points after the 0-1 win in Wolfsburg at the start of the season.

The goals for the first Bundesliga win since the 2-1 win against TSG Hoffenheim on February 13, 2010 were scored by Gerrit Holtmann after a spectacular solo (21st minute) and Sebastian Polter (56th), who had been signed a week earlier.

For Mainz, the first bankruptcy in the seventh Bundesliga duel with Bochum was a disillusionment after the 1-0 against RB Leipzig.

The day before the game, Bochum fans had flagged the access roads to the stadium with hundreds of blue and white triangular flags.

In the stadium there was a shooting festival atmosphere among the 12,548 spectators in the stadium, which was not completely sold out (13,500 allowed), the Herbert Grönemeyer hymn Bochum was thrown at the top.

The hosts rewarded their supporters with a great performance right from the start.

Holtmann, one of four newcomers to the starting line-up, provided the highlight when he started his little dance towards the goal in the middle of the opposing half.

He skilfully left five opponents standing, was suddenly alone in front of Mainz goalkeeper Zentner and tunneled this to the lead.

It almost had something of Lionel Messi in the Ruhr area.

The deafening jubilation had barely faded away when Simon Zoller scored a 2-0 volley after a Milos Pantovic corner (30th).

The video assistant signaled to referee Patrick Ittrich (Hamburg) that there was a hand touch when the ball was accepted - the goal was correctly not recognized.

The guests from Mainz only became really dangerous for the first time shortly before the break. Niklas Tauer failed after a Bochum mistake in the penalty area alone against Bochum goalkeeper Manuel Riemann (42.). In the second half, Mainz coaches Jeremiah St. Juste, Jean-Paul Boetius and Dominik Kohr brought three of the six players who had moved out of quarantine into the squad at short notice. But in the first unsuccessful efforts of the guests, the 2-0 fell through Polter, who headed into the far corner after a cross from Simon Zoller.

Bo Svensson then moved the other personnel options with EM participants Adam Szalai and Kevin Stöger, most recently also in quarantine. One after the other, the two had a huge opportunity to catch up, but Stöger failed first because of the outstanding Bochum goalkeeper Riemann, and Szalai missed the goal by a hair's breadth (both 80th). Otherwise, the VfL players successfully threw themselves into every action of the guests with verve.
