The German Basketball Federation (DBB) and the previous national coach Henrik Rödl end the collaboration.

This was the joint result of a conversation in Berlin, the association announced on Friday.

Rödl is leaving the DBB after four years as national coach on August 31.

Most recently, he had led Germany's basketball players to the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

"Now we have decided to put new, fresh impulses in this position in our own country, despite the Olympic success and with a view to the EuroBasket 2022", said DBB Vice President Armin Andres. Rödl took over the position in September 2017. "It is also my feeling that you can part with a successful result," said the former international himself about his departure. "I am grateful to everyone involved that participating in the Olympic Games in Tokyo has fulfilled a lifelong dream for me."

At first it was not clear who will succeed the 52-year-old.

The new national coach faces a special task, as Germany is co-host of the EM 2022.

The DBB team runs in Cologne (preliminary round) and in the event of progress in Berlin (final round).

It is also played in Georgia, Italy and the Czech Republic.

Under Rödl, the DBB team disappointed at the 2019 World Cup in China with 18th place, but convinced this year.

The quarter-finals at the summer games, which ended with a 70:94 (37:44) against Slovenia, was the greatest success of his coaching career for the European champions from 1993 after the impressive victory at the qualifying tournament in Split, Croatia.

Another major tournament did not take place during Rödl's tenure, as the EM, which was actually planned for 2021, had been postponed by one year due to the corona pandemic and the postponement of the Olympics. In the qualification for the EuroBasket 2022, Germany played out of competition. Rödl had taken part in the Barcelona Summer Games as a professional in 1992 and returned to the Olympics in Tokyo.
