Football fans can look forward to the return of the Champions League to free-to-air television.

After a three-year break, ZDF is again allowed to show moving images from the most important European Cup this season - however, in addition to the live broadcast of the final, only summaries of the game days can be seen late on Wednesday evening.

Almost a year after the announcement of the final contract, the public broadcaster confirmed to the German Press Agency on Wednesday that it would show a one-hour program with summaries of the match day for the first time on September 15 at 11 p.m.

So far, there has been no official confirmation of this agreement between the broadcaster and UEFA.

According to ZDF, long summaries of the games with German participation will be shown on a total of 14 match days under the name “Sportstudio UEFA Champions League”.

According to the broadcaster, the program also includes "excerpts and highlights from the other games on Tuesday and Wednesday".

It goes on to say: "Conversations, opinions and analyzes round off the concept."

For the second, it's a return to the Champions League.

Until 2018, the broadcaster had shown one premier class game per game day for six years before the broadcasts disappeared behind the payment barrier.

In the next three seasons - apart from the final - there will only be live games for an additional fee.

If you want the free choice, you need a subscription to DAZN and Amazon Prime Video.

Sky does not show the Champions League

DAZN is the largest Champions League provider on the German market.

According to its own information, the paid streaming service has acquired a package with 121 live games from UEFA, which also includes the playoffs this week and next.

In addition, there will be conferences and highlight reporting on both days.

The US internet giant Amazon is the new player on the market and shows the top game on Tuesday evening via its paid streaming service Prime Video. The live package includes a total of 16 games, including playoff games such as AS Monaco against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday evening. The pay TV broadcaster Sky has no Champions League on offer for the next three years.

The European Cup on free TV is also available from RTL group channels. She secured the complete rights for the Europa League and the new Conference League from UEFA. Games from the two competitions are shown on RTL and on the niche channel Nitro. The majority of the package with 282 games runs on the in-house streaming service TV Now. The playoff matches of 1. FC Union Berlin are not included in the offer. The first leg on Thursday against Kuopio PS shows Sport1.
