Arne Slot was pleasantly surprised on Thursday with the way Feyenoord played against FC Luzern.

Although the team from Rotterdam was almost certain of reaching the Conference League play-offs after one game, they went for it during the return in De Kuip.

"Before the game, we talked about how we would start. They exceeded my expectations. They dived in from the first second and took chance after chance. It was a long wait for the 2-0," Slot said.

Feyenoord made it 1-0 within ten minutes by Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who doubled the score after just over half an hour.

Early in the second half, Luis Sinisterra scored the third and final goal of the evening.

"They were very accurate on the ball, but they have been for a little longer. I think because they are getting a bit fitter. And without the ball they have again delivered a fantastic performance, because I have the impression that we didn't really give away a chance. ' said Slot, who remained sober.

"Actually, it is only now really starting, because the competitions start on Sunday and we are now going for the Conference League play-offs. We have to interpret what we are doing in the right way."

'Injury Jahanbakhsh is annoying'

A blemish on the evening was the failure of protagonist Jahanbakhsh, who had to be replaced at the end of the first half as a precaution with a muscle injury.

Slot hopes it goes well.

"That was annoying. A player always says after the game that it is not that bad, but we will have to judge that. We will be playing again in three days and you don't go out for nothing, especially in such a game."

Jahanbakhsh himself indeed thought that his injury was not that bad.

"I felt it a bit after five minutes, but thought: I just have to continue. After the first goal I thought: maybe I should switch. After the second goal I thought: if I make one more action, it will get worse and have to I might miss a few games," he said.

The summer addition is happy how Feyenoord is doing.

"Hopefully we will perform better and better. And for me personally it also feels good. I want to keep myself fit, keep going and get better and better."

Feyenoord starts the Eredivisie season on Sunday with an away game against Willem II.

Sweden's IF Elfsborg is the opponent in the play-offs of the Conference League.
