Miu Goto took Olympic gold in softball.

In celebration of the success, Mayor Takashi Kawamura pulled down his mouth guard and bit Miu Goto's gold medal, which was criticized on social media.

The mayor then apologized.

"I forgot my position as Nagoya's mayor and acted extremely inappropriately," Mayor Takashi Kawamura wrote in a statement, according to NBC.

The Olympic organizer announces that Goto will be awarded a new medal, according to AP.

The International Olympic Committee will be responsible for the compensation.

The organizer behind the Tokyo Olympics has previously commented on Kawamura's bite.

"We just want to give an official confirmation that Tokyo2020 medals are not edible," the organizers wrote in a post on Twitter.
