Kenya is the highest ranked African nation (19th) at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, with 10 medals including 4 gold.

More generally, with 37 medals including 11 in gold, Africa is doing a little better than in Rio, carried in particular by the beautiful fortnight of Egypt.

In the ranking of medals, the gold medals take precedence to decide between the nations.

At this level, if we gather the African results at the Olympic Games, the athletes did better than at the 2016 Olympics. From Rio, they left with 45 medals, of course, but 10 in gold, against 11 gold in Tokyo.

Main downside in Japan therefore: with a total of 37 podiums, there were fewer than 5 years ago.

Taekwondo remains the sport of number 2

As usual, Africa was the strongest in athletics - 23 out of 37 medals.

And as in Rio, taekwondo was sport number 2 (4 podiums), despite the poor performance of some favorites (Ivorian Cheick Cissé, Nigerien Abdoul Razak Issoufou Alfaga, etc.).

The new disciplines at the Games have also been quite successful for African athletes with silver in surfing for South African Bianca Buitendag and charms for Egyptians Feryal Abdelaziz (gold) and Giana Lotfy (bronze) in karate.

A surprising Egypt

Egypt, in general, has succeeded in its Olympic Games, with 6 medals, including 1 gold.

Either his best record since 1948 (5 medals including 2 gold).

Especially the Egyptians shone in four different disciplines, including modern pentathlon.

The other good news is the number of African countries distinguished during these Olympics: 13. The Beijing 2008 record, the best Olympics in history for Africa, is equaled at this level.

Even though no Central African country has stood out in Japan, the continent remains less dependent on the performance of East African athletes.
