But the Norwegian accelerated after the last lap and thundered away and past Cheruiyot.

Ingebrigsten finished in 3.28.32 - a time that sets a new Olympic record.

He beat the previous record, 3.31.65 held by Abel Kipsang from Kenya, with a bang.
