31-year-old Ryo Kiyuna won the gold medal in the men's form of karate held at the Tokyo Olympics on the 6th.

The gold medal I got was the result of my efforts with Tsuguo Sakumoto (73), a master who has been with me for about 15 years since I was in junior high school.

Mr. Sakumoto, the master of the Japanese national team who supervises "Kata", is from Okinawa, the same as Kitomo, and has the experience of winning the world championships for the third consecutive time, and has opened a dojo in Okinawa.

It was about 15 years ago when Kiyomi hit the gate of Mr. Sakumoto's dojo when he was in junior high school. At that time, I gradually became more prominent, such as winning the national tournament, and began to embrace "I want to be a world champion."

Mr. Sakumoto gave me a harsh word, "If you can practice 365 days a year, follow me", and from here the karate life with a three-legged race began.

While the strict gaze of his master, Mr. Sakumoto, was focused on Mr. Kitomo, he repeatedly performed "form" for more than 5 hours almost every day. It means that the dripping sweat sometimes accumulated on the tatami mats of the dojo.

love has survived the harsh training full of Kiyuna has grown into a Japanese ace as an absolute champion of the men's form, having improved his abilities and won his first international tournament in his fourth year of college, and then won the world championship for the third time in a row.

Under these circumstances, it was decided that karate will be held as a new competition at the Tokyo Olympics. Last time, at the time of the Tokyo Games, Mr. Sakumoto ran as a high school student and his hometown Okinawa as a torchbearer. In 57 years since then, Mr. Sakumoto's thoughts that he could not participate in were naturally conscious of Mr. Kitomo, and the gold medal became one of the goals for the two.
