From our special correspondent in Tokyo,

It was not the medal he dreamed of.

However, it is historic because unprecedented for Burkina Faso.

This August 5, 2021 in Tokyo, Hugues Fabrice Zango entered the legend of Burkinabè sport by winning his country's very first medal at the Olympic Games.

The triple jumper took bronze in the 2021 Olympics final.

Tense, as in qualifying, the 28-year-old athlete first jumped to 15.91 meters and 16.93 meters. Marks far removed from his African record outdoors (17.82 meters).

On his third attempt, Hugues Fabrice Zango landed at 17 meters 47. He will not do better then (17m31 and 17m43).

Despite the threat posed by his pursuers - the Algerian Yasser Triki, in particular, finished 5th - the Burkinabè clings to the podium.

He finished behind the Portuguese Pedro Pichardo (17m98) and the Chinese Yaming Zhu (17m57).

As at the 2019 World Championships, Hugues Fabrice Zango finished third.

Bronze that is worth gold for the land of upright men.
