Another 3.4 km -

Paltrinieri indeed joins the leading group.

Incidentally, Weertman really doesn't seem to be playing a significant role anymore.

He is more than a minute behind.

Another 3.8 km -

Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri seems to join the three that have been swimming in the lead since the start.

The names: Florian Wellbrock, Kristof Rasovszky and Marc-Antoine Olivier.

Another 4.3 km -

Ferry Weertman has the water largely to himself, so he is currently swimming alone.

Further on, leader Florian Wellbrock shakes the tree again.

Things don't look good for Ferry Weertman after about five kilometers.

Title prolongation seems very far away for the Dutchman.

  • 1. Florian Wellbrock

    56.20.60

  • 2. Kristof Rasovszky -

    +4.1

  • 3. Marc-Antoine Olivier -

    +8.8

  • 4. Gregorio Platrinieri -

    +15.5

Another 4.8 km -

Weertman seems to have missed the boat.

A group with the current number four to eight has come closer to the top three, but Weertman is not among them.

He is in ninth position and is more than 40 seconds behind.

Another 5.7 km -

At the start of the fourth round, Marco-Antoine Olivier has taken over the lead from Florian Wellbrock.

But more importantly: Ferry Weertman is slowly approaching.

His gap on the leader has decreased from 51 to 44 seconds.

The 29-year-old Weertman jumped into the water at 6.30 am (Japanese time) with a swimming cap, but he has now taken it off.

That is only nice for the viewer from dry land, because it makes him extra recognizable.

Another 6.0 km -

Weertman has moved up a few places and is in eleventh position.

His gap to Wellbrock is still 51 seconds.

Another 6.2 km -

For the time being, the trio in the lead remains out of reach for the pursuers.

The difference between number three Kristof Rasovszky and number four Gregorio Paltrinieri is no less than half a minute.

The conditions in the Japanese water are exceptionally tough and Sharon van Rouwendaal can talk about that.

She finished second in the women's race yesterday and called the conditions "unprecedented."

The water temperature is around 30 degrees Celsius.

7.1 km to go -

When entering the third round, we have to wonder how Ferry Weertman is doing.

Will he have a fantastic catch-up race in the house later?

It is necessary, because he is almost 54 seconds behind the three leaders.

Rasovszky has just joined the German and Frenchman.

Another 7.7 km -

Hungarian Kristof Rasovszky tries to join the two leaders.

Then we see a big gap to the other swimmers, including Ferry Weertman

The first round of just over 1.4 kilometers is over.

Ferry Weertman starts slow to say the least, as he swims in 25th position.

The Dutchman is more than 40 seconds behind Wellbrock.

  • Top three after first round:

  • 1. Florian Wellbrock -

    15.49.3

  • 2. Marc-Antoine Olivier -

    +6.4

  • 3. Kristof Rasovszky -

Another 8.8 km -

Wellbrock is the first to arrive at the drinking zone and grabs a water bottle.

Frenchman Marc-Antoine Olivier - the number two at the 2019 World Cup - does not drink and joins the German in the lead.

Florian Wellbrock is not just anyone.

The German became world champion at this distance in 2019.

Another 9.1 km -

After 0.9 kilometers the first measuring point is and the differences are immediately clear: Florian Wellbrock is seriously gone.

The Germans have more than ten seconds on the current number two.

Weertman still swims in the large group in sixteenth place.

9.6 km to go -

Unlike yesterday we get an early attack!

The German Florian Wellbrock immediately punches a small hole.

So we start in the water in the south of Tokyo, where Ferry Weertman hopes to extend his Olympic title.

That is something that has never been achieved before in the part that has been Olympic since 2008.
