She receives protection in the country after stating that she fears for her life if she returns to Belarus.

- She's worried about her family.

She is tired and of course she is excited about what has happened in recent days, says the Austrian Minister Magnus Brunner who met Timanovskaya when she stopped in Vienna.

24-year-old Timanovskaya sought refuge on Sunday during the Tokyo Olympics.

She said that they tried to force her home to Belarus when she had criticized her coaches.

Belarus's authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko's government has been pushing hard for all forms of opposition since last year's controversial presidential election.

Timanovskaya is one of two thousand Belarusian athletes who have signed an open letter demanding new elections and the release of political prisoners.

What led to the latest developments was a post on Instagram where Timanovskaya criticizes her coaches and says that they registered her for an Olympic race without her knowledge.
