Soufiane El Bakkali won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games on August 2, over 3000 meters steeplechase.

Running in 8 minutes, 8 seconds and 90 hundredths, the 25-year-old Moroccan beat Ethiopian Lamecha Girma and Kenyan Benjamin Kigen.

The 2017 vice-world champion thus took his revenge on East Africans who so often frustrated him.

He is the first Olympic champion of Morocco since Hicham El Guerrouj in 2004.
