Beach volleyball Olympic champion Laura Ludwig can continue to dream of another gold coup.

In the round of 16 of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Ludwig and her new partner Margareta Kozuch beat Brazilians Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda Santos Lisboa 2-1 (21:19, 19:21, 16:14) and made it through to the quarter-finals.

Ludwig thus denied 38-year-old Agatha the successful revenge for the 2016 Olympic final. Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst had won the final in Rio against Agatha and her teammate at the time, Barbara Seixas.

Because an opposing team could not compete after a corona infection, Ludwig and Kozuch had been free of play since Monday.

They were all the more excited for the match on Sunday.

"We enjoyed the days off to relax and then build up the tension again," said Ludwig.

The second German duo Karla Borger and Julia Sude missed the knockout round.

In the men's category, Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler will face the fourth in the world rankings Jacob Gibb and Tri Bourne from the USA in the round of 16 on Monday (3:00 p.m. CEST).
