An San didn't tremble and took it all.

The South Korean archer won individual, mixed doubles and team women's gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

By winning three Olympic medals, the champion, aged only 20, has become a legend.

This performance had never before been achieved by an athlete from his country at the Summer Games.

But this harvest of titles has been eclipsed by a controversy.

The sportswoman had to deal with an avalanche of misogynistic comments on social networks.

The reason ?

The fact that she adopted a short haircut for her hair.

In South Korea, this "boyish" style is described as "feminist" by some and may not appeal to everyone.

“Are you sure An San is not a feminist?” One Internet user wrote on Instagram as spotted by the New York Times.

"She ticks all the boxes to be one."

On the champion's social network, a user also asked her why she had cut her hair.

"Because it's more convenient," she only responded with a smirk emoji.

During the competition, An San's coach even had to interrupt journalists eager to ask questions unrelated to the tournament, according to Reuters.

The champion herself refused to speak on this subject.

The New York Times reports that members of the South Korean volleyball and shooting team also suffered comments about their hairstyles during the Games.

According to the Korea Times, public discourse has recently escalated in South Korea to become "a battle of the sexes."

Celebrities have been accused of being feminists by "reactionary online groups of dominant males who believe that men, especially younger ones, are treated unfairly by feminist politicians."

A support campaign on the networks

An San, however, received a lot of support.

Her fans have sent hundreds of messages to the National Archery Federation asking them to protect the Olympic champion.

The hashtag #women_shortcut_campaign has also spread on South Korean social media, with many women posting pictures of their short haircuts.

Actress and director Koo Hye-sun, followed by nearly two million people, posted a photo of her with her short hair herself.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has taken a stand after this controversy.

He congratulated An San for these three titles and took the opportunity to silence his critics.

"His pride is ours," insisted the head of state, who greeted this historic treble, despite a context between "excessive expectation and discrimination" around the young archer.
