Werder Bremen clinched their first win of the season on the second day of the second Bundesliga after a thrilling final phase.

The team of coach Markus Anfang won 3-2 (1-0) at Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday evening.

Josh Sargent shone with a double, in stoppage time Maximilian Eggestein (90th minute + 6) converted a penalty for the decision.

For Bremen it was the first victory in the lower house in more than 40 years.

Düsseldorf, on the other hand, suffered the first defeat of the young season after their opening win last week against SV Sandhausen.

The American Sargent shot his Bremen team with a brace (39th and 64th) in front of 12,850 spectators.

Rouwen Hennings with his third goal of the season (47th) and Khaled Narey (90th + 4) each equalized.

But Bremen countered again by Eggestein.

The Düsseldorf team took control of the game early in rainy weather and had a good double chance after a quarter of an hour.

While Edgar Prib's shot was saved by Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer (17th), Jakub Piotrowski's head just missed the goal.

Bremen only found their way into the game better after around 25 minutes and had the first real opportunity through Niclas Füllkrug (28th).

After changing sides, it was again the Düsseldorfers who started fresher and took control. But Bremen struck again and bit their way into the game thanks to a strong Ömer Topraks.
