Niklas Wellen tipped in the first goal after ten minutes and Constantin Staib made it 2-0 in the 41st minute.

Seven minutes before the end, Timm Herzbruch even put the Germans at 3-0 with a backhand.

Just before time, Jeroen Hertzberger did something in return, making the result a little more bearable.

Earlier in the group stage, the Orange had already lost to Belgium (1-3) and against Great Britain it became 2-2.

South Africa (5-3) and Canada (4-2) were defeated, so that the team was already sure of a ticket for the knockout phase.

The Orange was able to create few chances and only got a chance in the first half through Hertzberger, who, like the other attackers, could hardly create any danger.

Only in the last minutes did the Netherlands get the first and only penalty corner, which resulted in no goal.

The game between the Netherlands and Germany was a repeat of the final of the European Championship in Amstelveen.

A month and a half ago, the Orange squad won after shoot-outs from the Germans.

After regular time it was 2-2.

The Netherlands finishes fourth in the group stage and therefore plays in the quarterfinals against Australia, the number one of the other group.

The quarterfinals will be played on Sunday.
