Virgil van Dijk is happy and grateful that he made his return to Liverpool on Thursday after a long recovery from a serious knee injury.

The captain of Orange realizes that he has come a long way.

"285 days ago I started the route to play again. It's hard to put into words how I feel, but I feel blessed with the support of so many people," said Van Dijk after the exhibition game with Hertha BSC , which was lost 4-3.

Thirty-year-old Van Dijk came on the field in the 69th minute during the game in Innsbruck.

It was his first appearance in a Liverpool shirt since October last year, when he was badly injured at the hands of Everton keeper Jordan Pickford.

After his return, Van Dijk thanked everyone who assisted him during his rehabilitation.

"The surgery, my physiotherapists, coaches and the staff who assisted me from day one. My teammates who gave me energy and motivated me," he summed up.

"The supporters for their love, support and compassion. And especially my family, because without them I would be nowhere. Thank you very much. But the work does not stop, I have only just started. I have to carry on like this."

In addition to Van Dijk, fellow defender Joe Gomez also made his comeback after injury.

The next exhibition game is not until August 8, when Athletic Club is the opponent.

The first league game is on August 14 against Norwich City.

Thankful ❤️🙏🏽
