Sailors Lobke Berkhout and Afrodite Zegers got off to a bad start on Wednesday in the 470 class at the Olympic Games.

The duo finished outside the top ten in the first two races in Enoshima Bay.

The forty-year-old Berkhout and the eleven-year-young Zegers came in eleventh place in the first race, after which the second race was also unsuccessful.

The couple then had to settle for twelfth place.

After the first day, Berkhout and Zegers occupy twelfth place in the standings with 23 penalty points.

Polish duo Agnieszka Skrzypulec-Jolanta Ogar are in the lead by winning both races.

There are a total of ten races and a medal race on the program.

Berkhout and Zegers have been a couple in the 470 class since 2018 after Berkhout made her comeback in sailing after six years.

In March they just missed the world title and had to content themselves with a silver medal.

Berkhout won bronze at the London Games in 2012 with Lisa Westerhof and silver at the Beijing Games in 2008 with Marcelien de Koning.

Zegers finished fourth with Anneloes van Veen at the Games in Rio de Janeiro five years ago.
