Sailor Marit Bouwmeester rose to third place on Tuesday in the general classification of the Laser Radial class at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The Dutchman finished third and ninth in the fifth and sixth race respectively.

In the sixth race Bouwmeester crossed the finish line in tenth place, but American number four Paige Railey was disqualified.

The fifth race was won by Switzerland's Maud Jayet and the sixth race by Sweden's Josefin Olsson.

Bouwmeester climbed two places in the standings.

With 35 points, the reigning Olympic champion is one point behind number two Olsson (34) and thirteen points behind the Danish leader Anne-Marie Rindom.

She was still in eighteenth place after the second race.

There are four more races and the medal race in the Laser Radial class.

Competitors may cancel their worst result in the regular races.

Bekkering and Duetz changeable on opening day

Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz got off to a mixed start in the 49erFX class on Tuesday.

The Dutch duo disappointed in the first race with a thirteenth place, did slightly better in the second with eighth place and recovered in the third with a second place.

The British Charlotte Dobson and Saskia Tidey were victorious in the first and the second race.

The Brazilians Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze did so in the third race, in which Bekkering and Duetz led for a long time, but were overtaken before the last buoy.

Nicholas Heiner started poorly in the Finn class.

The Dutchman had to settle for eleventh place in the first race.

The Turk Alican Kaynar was the fastest.

A second race in the Finn class is scheduled for later on Tuesday.
