For the sprinters Lisa Mayer (Wetzlar) and Lisa Nippgen (Mannheim), the Olympic Games in Tokyo ended before they really started due to injuries.

Mayer, who was nominated after her 11.12 seconds over the 100 meters and for the relay, had a problem with an old injury at the training camp in Miyazaki.

Relay runner Nippgen is suspected of having torn muscle fibers, and both athletes will soon start their journey home to Germany.

With that, Vice-European Champion Gina Lückenkemper (Berlin) can hope for a single start again.

The 24-year-old, who initially missed the qualification due to an injury, started the trip to Japan as a substitute candidate for the 100 meters and the relay.

“We still have to decide together whether she will compete in the 100 meters,” said head coach Annett Stein, pointing out that Lückenkemper “has not been 100 percent in shape recently”.

The German champion Alexandra Burghardt (Burghausen) and Tatjana Pinto (Paderborn) are set for the 100 meters.

The preliminary runs start on Friday (4.40 a.m. CEST in the FAZ live ticker for Olympia, on ZDF and on Eurosport).
