• McLaren GT Woking's first Gran Turismo

Any

McLaren

is designed and tuned to be able to ride on the circuit with solvency but, of the entire range, this is the

most pleasant

model

to travel

fast on the road.

The British firm has a long and successful track record in competition since the sixties, when driver

Bruce McLaren

decided to make the leap to building

his own racing cars

. Since then, Woking cars have won

182 Formula 1 grands prix

, making the brand

second-best

behind Ferrari.

Road vehicle production began on an 'experimental' basis in

1992

, with the

McLaren F1

, but it was not until

2010

that McLaren created

McLaren Automotive

for production of series models. In this decade several supercars and some extreme models have been launched in limited editions, but to date

there was no Gran Turismo in the range

with the classic connotations that these acronyms imply.

The McLaren GT wants to fill this gap, that of the great sports cars that, without sacrificing

first-rate dynamics, allow long trips

with a high degree of comfort and, in addition, offer a

certain versatility

for daily use, provided that they are not need more than two seats.

The new coupe continues to maintain an absolutely sporty technology, with a very light

monocoque

chassis

made of carbon fiber

, a

4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine

that develops

620 horsepower

or

suspensions and brakes of maximum efficiency

when making use demanding of them.

But the big difference is in

ride comfort and

luggage

space

.

No luggage problem

For the latter, a rear piece has been added to the monocoque that allows to

lengthen the length of the car

and achieve a

420-liter boot

, a not inconsiderable figure in a car with a central engine.

Of course, with little height and irregular shapes, although it makes up for it thanks to its enormous depth.

In addition, it is complemented by a

second 150-liter boot in

front, this absolutely square and usable.

Regarding comfort, both the independent double wishbone suspension on each wheel as well as the brakes and the steering have been tuned with a

less radical configuration

. The

electronically controlled

adaptive dampers

are softer, especially in comfort mode, while the brakes have a softer feel at low speeds, as does the steering, which has

greater assistance in maneuvering

and slow driving.

With all this, the body of the occupants will suffer less on long trips, but that does not mean that a

very sporty behavior

is dispensed with

, especially in

sport modes

and, of course, on the

track

, designed to roll on the track.

The interior is even more sober than that of other McLaren, with the necessary elements to

enjoy without limits at the wheel

... and few more luxuries.

Even though the finishes are fine,

more sophisticated details are

lacking

in the materials used for the buttons and knobs.

Basically, the dashboard consists of a small

digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch center screen

for the infotainment system, which now carries a much faster operating system.

A pleasure to travel

On a trip through the

Alps area

, between Switzerland and France, we were able to verify all those differentiating characteristics of the McLaren GT, which, in effect, allows to travel long distances with a

comfort far superior

to that of its brothers, although it is also capable of fully satisfy our sporting concerns on mountain roads, with impeccable behavior. For both, sportiness and comfort, light seats help that support the body perfectly and have an

ideal cushion

.

The way the engine delivers power, as well as the shift from gear to gear of the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, is also

smoother and quieter

than other models in the range.

But we must not forget that the sport mode and, especially the track, enhance the sportiness of the car and bring it closer to that of any McLaren.

And, despite its more 'leisurely' philosophy, the GT continues to offer impressive performance figures, such as acceleration from

0 to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds

or a maximum speed of

326 km / h

.

Its price is also somewhat more content and 'only' costs

228,000 euros

.
