In a statement, Real Madrid announced that its striker Karim Benzema had tested positive for Covid-19.

In Spain, contaminations have skyrocketed in recent weeks because of the Delta variant.

Frenchman Karim Benzema, a 33-year-old Real Madrid star scorer, tested positive for Covid-19, the Spanish club announced on Friday without providing further details.

"Real Madrid announce that our player Karim Benzema has tested positive for Covid-19," the club said in a one-line statement.

Several Real Madrid players were infected during the season just ended, including ex-captain Sergio Ramos, who has since left for PSG, Raphaël Varane, Nacho, Eden Hazard or Dani Carjaval.

Club president Florentino Perez or former coach Zinedine Zidane were also infected.

The announcement of Karim Benzema's contamination comes as contagions have skyrocketed in several countries, including Spain and France, due to the Delta variant.

Almost 300 goals for Real

Since joining Real in 2009, Karim Benzema has scored nearly 300 goals for the Madrid club.

He was also crowned best player in the Spanish league in 2020 and became Real's major attacking asset after the departure of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018.

Outside the lawns, the player, who was recalled to the France team for the last Euro, is still being prosecuted for "complicity in attempted blackmail" in the case of the "sextape" of Mathieu Valbuena which had broken out in 2015. His trial is due to be held in October.
