Galatasaray's trainer Fatih Terim showed himself realistic on Wednesday evening after the defeat against PSV in the second preliminary round of the Champions League.

The Turkish top club lost the first leg in the Philips Stadium with no less than 5-1.

"Galatasaray fans may now understand better why I wanted a contract here for at least three years. It takes time to perform at this level and we are going to do everything we can to succeed in the long term," Terim said at his press conference afterwards. according to

Galatasaray was 'only' 2-1 behind at halftime and could still hope for a good result, but PSV simply walked away from Terim's team in the second half.

Mario Götze took care of the 3-1 and 5-1 in Eindhoven and Eran Zahavi scored his third goal of the evening in between.

Terim, who has been a trainer at Galatasaray since December 2017, received critical questions about his tactical choices after the game.

He decided to opt for a reinforced defense and to keep attackers Radamel Falcao and Mostafa Mohamed on the bench.

"We thought we should play like this, also because we didn't have all the players," Terim said.

"Falcao and Mohamed were also not ready to start. Everyone can say what they want about it. We had a battle plan, but when you give away goals in such a simple way, you quickly fall behind the facts."

The return is scheduled for next week in Istanbul, but Terim has little faith in a stunt for his own audience.

"PSV was better, deservedly won and will continue to the next round. In any case, they are very close."
