The 29-year-old Bertens was placed sixteenth in the schedule of 64 participants in Tokyo.

The Westland player faced Vondrousova once before and she lost that game.

At the 2018 US Open, the Czech won 7-6 (4), 1-6 and 7-6 (1).

If Bertens wins two matches, she can meet Japan's Naomi Osaka in the third round.

The second-placed Osaka is making her comeback in her own country, after she withdrew from Roland Garros because of the fuss that arose about her press boycott.

Last month, Bertens announced that she would end her career after this season.

Before traveling to Japan, she announced that the Olympic Games will be her last tournament.
