Brisbane became the third Australian city to host the Summer Olympics after Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

The International Olympic Committee has established the "Olympic Host Committee" to replace the previous "Evaluation Committee" and is responsible for recommending multiple or single candidate cities to the IOC Executive Committee.
