Alicja Tchórz, 28, Bartosz Piszczorowicz, 21 Aleksandra Polańska, 20, Mateusz Chowaniec, 18, Dominika Kossakowska, 20, and Jan Holub, 25, all had to return home from Japan to Poland on Sunday.

The Polish swimmers' Olympic dream has been shattered after an administrative mistake by the Polish Swimming Federation (PZP).

They sent a total of 23 swimmers and shortly after, the above-mentioned swimmers were flown home when the squad needed to be reduced.

This after PZP misunderstood the International Swimming Federation's (FINA) qualification standards according to Australian Sky News.

The swimmers have now written a letter requesting the resignation of President Pawel Slominski.

"The union's actions have led to an unparalleled event in Polish sports history," the letter said, according to Sky News.

"In addition, Polish swimming - both in the public eye and in the eyes of potential sponsors - has been exposed as laughable."

"We appeal to the Chairman and the entire Board to resign immediately."

"Incompetent"

Mateusz Chowaniec directs great criticism at the union on Instagram.

"I am deeply shocked by this absurd situation, which should never have happened.

All I want is to wake up from this inconceivable nightmare.

But thanks to the incompetent people at the swimming association, I am now back in Poland instead of in Japan ", he writes.

Alicja Tchórz also expresses her disappointment on social media.

"We have devoted five years of our lives to preparing for this," she writes on Facebook.

Expresses remorse

Pawel Slominski himself has commented on the mistake, according to Sky News.

- I express great regret, sadness and bitterness over the situation, he says.
