French international striker Olivier Giroud has completed his move to AC Milan from Chelsea, with whom he won the Champions League last season, the Lombardy club announced yesterday.

The 34-year-old underwent a medical examination the day before yesterday, before signing with the Italian league runners-up, returning to the Champions League after an absence of seven years.

Giroud will play in the front line alongside the Swedish veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic (39 years), to be among a group of scorers who do not know the meaning of age, led by Juventus star and Portuguese national team Cristiano Ronaldo, who was crowned top scorer in the league last season despite his 36 years, or Fabio Quagliarella, who extended his contract with Sampdoria for an additional year at the age of 38.

"Milan is pleased to announce the contract with Olivier Jonathan Giroud with a full transfer from Chelsea," Milan said in a statement, without announcing the duration of the contract, which local newspapers suggested would be two years, and for only two million euros.

After winning the French League with Montpellier in 2012, Giroud moved to Arsenal in the same year and defended his colors until 2018, before joining Chelsea.

He played 110 international matches (46 goals) with the French national team, which was part of its squad in the last European Cup, and was eliminated from the final price by losing to Switzerland on penalties 4-5 after a 3-3 draw in the original and extra time.

Giroud's decision to join Milan, where he will play alongside his compatriots Theo Hernandez and goalkeeper Mike Magnian, who recently came from Lille, the French league champion, in order to fill the void left by Giannuelgi Donnarumma, who moved to Paris Saint-Germain, despite renewing his contract with Chelsea for a year after winning the Champions League title at the expense Manchester City.

Milan returns to the Champions League for the first time since the 2013-2014 season, after coach Stefano Pioli's team finished the Italian League in second place behind its arch-rival Inter, and in front of Atalanta and Juventus, who gave up the title after monopolizing it for nine seasons.

• Giroud (34 years) played for the French clubs Montpellier, Arsenal and Chelsea, and is preparing for his first experience in Italy.
