The International Olympic Committee has decided to attract the youth component to the Summer Olympics, which begins on the 23rd of this month in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, with the introduction of “more inclusive, more urban, and with the participation of more women.”

In this way, the International Olympic Committee announced the new 2016 Summer Olympics, which were scheduled for its 32nd edition last summer, before the Corona virus intervened to postpone it until the summer of 2021.

And if the Corona epidemic led to the postponement of the Games for a year, and forced the organizers to make many unprecedented concessions and arrangements, including the almost complete absence of spectators in the Olympic facilities and stadiums, this did not affect the reform process wanted by the President of the International Olympic Committee, German Thomas Bach.

The International Olympic Committee decided to add 15 new events, with a focus on events that combine men and women, such as the mixed relay 4 times 100m in swimming, the mixed relay 4 times 400m in athletics, mixed doubles in table tennis, and mixed events in judo, triathlon and archery .

As a result, there will be twice as many mixed events in Tokyo (18), compared to the previous Games in Rio in 2016 (9).

And in a message that reflects the reality of the times, according to the International Olympic Committee, the Tokyo Olympics will be “the first Olympic Games in history that respect the principle of gender balance”, as the share of mathematics represents 49% of the total participants, compared to 44.2% in the 2012 London Olympics, and 45.6% at the 2016 Rio Olympics

With the aim of achieving this gender balance, the IOC revised the Olympic programme, replacing men's events with women's events in rowing, boxing and canoeing.

As a result, for the first time, four new international federations presented an identical number of men's and women's events (rowing, canoeing, weightlifting and shooting).

In terms of participating athletes, for the first time, six international federations achieved a balance between men and women (rowing, canoeing, weightlifting, judo, shooting and sailing).

This gender balance will be visible from the opening ceremony, because for the first time, each of the 206 National Olympic Committees will have to include at least one male and one female athlete in its Olympic delegation.

The committee also encouraged the 206 members to carry the national flag at the opening ceremony by two athletes, a woman and a man.

The Tokyo Games also mark the Olympic start for skateboarding, climbing, windsurfing and karate, while baseball and its women's softball counterpart return, after they were absent from (Beijing 2008).

Skateboarding, climbing and windsurfing, as well as newer events such as 3x3 basketball and BMX off-road bikes, are all played by youngsters who don't usually care about the Olympics.

And sports such as skateboarding, climbing and windsurfing will once again be included in the program of the next Olympic Games in 2024, in Paris, along with new, more “progressive” sports, such as break dancing.
