England's dream start - takes the lead immediately

The goal gave white-clad England confidence while Italy did not really come into its own.

Italy's best goal chance in the first half came in the 35th minute when Federico Chiesa got past Declan Rice and went on to finish - but the shot went close outside the post.

And the team went into the halftime break with the score 1-0.

Second half

At the start of the second half, the English called for a penalty after Raheem Sterling went down in the penalty area - but without hearing from referee Björn Kuipers.

A few minutes later, Italy got a free kick after Insigne was sent off just outside the penalty area - a free kick that the striker himself took, but the finish did not hit the target.

But in the 67th minute Leonardo Bonucci saved his Italy.

After a corner, where the ball was taken in the post, the midfielder forced in the equalizer for the blue-clad.

And with his 34 years and 71 days, Bonucci became the oldest goal scorer in a European Championship final.

Leonardo Bonucci equalizes for Italy

After the 1-1 goal, the game calmed down a bit and both teams played more carefully.

And after six extra minutes, the referee blew off the regular playing time and the match went to extra time.

Extension and punishment

Despite goal chances in both directions, the extra time ended goalless and the European Championship final had to be decided on penalties.

There, Italy pulled the longest straw and can thus claim the title of European Champion.
