They never leave each other.

For the fourth Euro in a row, Italy and Spain meet in a knockout match on Tuesday night for a highly anticipated semi-final at Wembley.

The Italians, impressive since the start of the competition, hit hard by eliminating Belgium in the quarter-finals (2-1).

The Spaniards, for their part, hardly dismissed Switzerland on penalties (1-1 ap, 3 tab to 1) after their incredible round of 16 against Croatia (5-3 ap).

But who will emerge victorious from the fourth act of this great classic?

Quarter-finals of Euro 2008: Spain at the end of the night (0-0 ap, 4 tab to 2)

Italy, the reigning world champion, qualified for the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 thanks to a victory against France (2-0), which they eliminated in the last group match. Spain comes with big ambitions and an impressive team, made up of Casillas, Puyol, Ramos, Xavi, Iniesta and Torres. Trained at the time by Luis Aragones, they are not yet the best selection in the world, but it will only be a matter of time.

This quarter-final is in any case extremely tense and hooked, and ends with a goalless draw after extra time.

During the penalty shoot-out, Iker Casillas was heroic in repelling attempts by De Rossi and Di Natale.

Cesc Fabregas scored the victory penalty, eliminating the reigning world champions.

A few days later, La Roja won in the final against Germany thanks to a goal from Fernando "El Nino" Torres (1-0).

History is on the move.

Euro 2012 final: the masterpiece of the Spanish golden generation (4-0)

Four years later, Spain arrives with the favorite long shadow label, in the wake of its coronation at the 2010 World Cup. The two teams face each other in the first group match, with a magnificent performance from the Italians, who will pass very close to victory (1-1). When they find themselves in the final, everyone expects an intense and balanced shock. It must be said that the Squadra Azzurra has just hit hard by eliminating Germany in the semi-finals (2-1), with a double from Mario Balotelli.

But against all odds, there will be no match.

The Spain of Vicente Del Bosque, who replaced Aragones after Euro 2008, signs his masterpiece, with a dazzling performance that disgusts the Italy of Cesare Prandelli.

David Silva opened the scoring in the 14th minute, before Jordi Alba made the break just before the break (41st).

Fernando Torres (84th) and Juan Mata (88th), who came into play a few minutes earlier, complete the insolent Spanish success.

Double European champion, world champion: La Roja is at the top and enters the pantheon of football.

Round of 16 of Euro 2016: the revenge of the Squadra (2-0)

Four years later, this formidable Spanish team is at the end of their cycle. Released in the first round of the 2014 World Cup after notably a humiliation against the Netherlands (5-1), La Roja wants to take his revenge at Euro 2016. It starts well with two wins against the Czech Republic (1 -0) and Turkey (3-0) but lost against Croatia (2-1), finishing second in their group. La Nazionale, also in the reconstruction phase after its elimination in the first round of the 2014 World Cup, finished at the top of its group with a superb victory against Belgium (2-0).

The round of 16, at the Stade de France, will be clearly to the advantage of Italy coached by Antonio Conte. La Roja, without ideas and unrecognizable, concedes his first goal in a knockout match of a Euro since 2000 in the 33rd minute, by Giorgio Chiellini. Gianluigi Buffon then allows the Azzurri to maintain their slight advantage. Finally, Graziano Pelle doubles the end of the match (90th + 1) and gives Italy its first victory against Spain in official competition since the quarter-final of the 1994 World Cup. And if La Roja took his turn his revenge, Tuesday evening?
